Platinum Investment Casting , Part II : Alloy

چکیده
Two widely used jewellery investment casting alloys (platinum with 5 wt% ruthenium (Pt-5Ru) and platinum with 5 wt% cobalt (Pt-5Co)) suffer from poor castability and other drawbacks. In this work thermodynamic calculations of alloy properties were employed to optimise the alloy compositions. Segregation behaviour appeared to be important for the melting range. Scheil simulations were used to simulate segregation under typical casting conditions. Based on these simulation results, small additions of Co were found to signifi cantly improve the castability of PtRu. Casting trials proved that ternary Pt-Co-Ru alloys show superior casting properties, in particular better form-fi lling and surface quality and reduced grain size and porosity compared to binary alloys. In order to replace Co, further work on other ternary systems appears necessary to study their melting range experimentally.

Development of casting investment preventing blackening of noble metal alloys part 1. Application of developed investment for Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy.
The objective of this study is to develop a casting investment that prevents the blackening of the cast surface of noble metal alloys. The experimental investments were prepared using a gypsum-bonded investment in which the metallic powders such as boron (B), silicon (Si), aluminum (Al) and titanium (Ti) were added as oxidizing agents. An Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy was cast into the mold made of the pre...

متن کاملNumerical Simulation of the Investment Casting Process
Determining alloy shrinkage factors is very important for the investment casting process. Casting dimensions can be obtained from numerical simulations of heat transfer and deformation phenomena. The accuracy of the dimensional results depends on heat transfer results. In order to validate heat transfer models, temperature data were obtained during casting of aluminum alloy A356 in shell molds ...
متن کاملMarginal accuracy of nickel chromium copings fabricated by conventional and accelerated casting procedures, produced with ringless and metal ring investment procedures: A comparative in vitro study.
BACKGROUND Conventional investing and casting techniques are time-consuming and usually requires 2-4 h for completion. Accelerated nonstandard, casting techniques have been reported to achieve similar quality results in significantly less time, namely, in 30-40 min. During casting, it is essential to achieve compensation for the shrinkage of solidifying alloy by investment expansion. The metal ...
